Billy Crystal has just tweeted that he will host the 84th Academy Awards, scheduled for February 26. 2012.
Crystal tweeted, “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”
In response, The Academy retweeted his message: thus, confirming the arrangement.
This will be Billy Crystal's ninth as master of ceremonies for the annual show. Crystal has hosted 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2004.
Bob Hope is credited with having hosted the most shows at 18.
Crystal will replace Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy left the show following the lead of Director Brett Ratner. Brett Ratner vacated his producer duties on Tuesday. Brian Grazer will direct the Oscars, and will be joined by Don Mischer who will produce.
Ratner exited as producer of the telecast after catching flack from The Academy for making a series of derogatory remarks this past weekend. Those remarks include Ratner saying “rehearsal is for fags”, as well as discussing his sex life with Howard Stern
James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted the ceremony in 2011.
Nominations for the 84th Oscars will be announced January 24, 2011.
