The Statue of Liberty turns 125 today. In celebration, a series of webcams will be installed on, and around, her torch to give unprecedented views not seen by visitors to the monument.
Live video footage from 5 web cams donated by Earthcam, Inc., will stream vista views of the New York City harbor and skyline.
A ceremony marking the marking the 125th anniversary of the statue’s original dedication will pre-cede the cameras going live. The original dedication took place on October 29, 1886.
Starting Saturday, Lady Liberty will close for one year to undergo a $28 million renovation; which include upgrades to the pedestal, new stairways and elevators.
“Liberty Enlightening the World“, the full name of the Lady Liberty, was first designated as a National Monument in 1924. As a gift from France in 1886, it has become recognized as a symbol of freedom all over the world.
According to the National Park Service, an estimated 3.5 million people visit the national park each year.
