Now Introducing… Tokidoki “Tattoo” Barbie

I’ve never been a fan of Barbie.  Much to my parents chagrin, I loved toys that made loud sounds, sped fast, or were filled with slime and goo.  They would always find mutilated Barbie remains around the house, one with no limbs but 5 heads, or headless ones with all limbs.  Oven, pantry, and dresser drawers were just some of the resting places of my Barbie creations.  People find couch coins or sofa candy, guests in our home would discover Barbie arms and heads.  I’m not going to lie, my parents were worried for a while.

Sold out at $50, the new, limited edition Tokidoki Barbie puts a faux-wannabe punk flair to the same old unrealistic body proportions of the traditional Barbie doll.  This bold new Barbie has perfectly coiffed short, pink hair.  In fact, she is so edgy, she even wears a black t-shirt with a heart for a skull, permanent tattoos on her chest, and cute cartoon-print tights and arms, and has a bunny costume with spikes on her little dog.

As reported by the Huffington Post, reviews for this “controversial” new Barbie are mixed.  Some parents raised concerns about young, impressionable girls starting to believe tattoos are cool, while some say this is a step in the right direction of diversifying the Barbie line.

Whether the new Tokidoki Barbie is making a diversity statement, one thing is clear: Barbie is still the prime example of what girls should not strive to become.  She’s just wearing different style clothing and hair this time.
