Disc-less Netflix Streaming on PS3 and Wii

No need to insert a disc to stream Netflix to a PS3 or Wii anymore.

Despite the Wii’s ability to install downloadable apps, license restrictions prevented this from being possible. Instead, whenever Wii owners wanted to to stream video from their Netflix account they had to insert the disc and run the player from it. The Wii first offered Netflix on April 12, 2010.

The Netflix app will be downloadable and then available right from the Wii’s menu screen, just like any other piece of WiiWare. The app is free while Netflix starts at $8.99 a month.

The PS3 Netflix installer will be made available today as well. That offering doesn’t just get streaming Netflix on par with the service on the Xbox 360 (which never required a disc) but it actually surpasses it. This is the case because now Netflix on the PS3 can support 1080p streaming (when available) as well as 5.1 channel surround sound.

Is this convenience and convergence of services enough to make you non-current subscibers of Netflix willing to join the service ?
