Rock has been acquired by Cydia – This is big news in the world of the jailbroken iDevice.
We've always known that Cydia was synonymous with a jailbroken iDevice – it was always THE go-to location for apps and cool themes. However, Rock was quickly coming up and gaining favor with it's selection of mods and applications – of primary note was the ability to backup your downloaded and installed devices.
Now, through an announcement on ModMyI and within the Rock app we learn that Rock will roll into Cydia, making Cydia the largest independent iOS app store.
After 18 months in the iOS Jailbreak scene Rock has been acquired by SaurikIT (makers of Cydia) and over the next few days we will be moving all products/users/licenses over to Cydia Store.
Transitions will be happening quickly, with work underway this weekend. It's comforting to know that all licenses will also transfer over such that consumers won't have to repurchase an app when an update comes out.
Here are some interesting facts that Rock released about their impact on the jailbreaking community:
- Number of developers with apps listed in the Rock Store: 124 (from 19 countries)
- Unique iOS devices that installed Rock: 4.6 million (from 220 countries / territories)
- Registered Rock users: 2+ million
- Number of app licenses sold: 500,000
