Now Hiring: Yelp

Now Hiring: Yelp 1Position: UI Designer / Product Manager

Think you’ve got the UI design skills to wow over 30 million users each month? Then Yelp wants to hear from you.

We’re looking for designers that can create world-class user interfaces that visually amaze but are simple to use. In an “average” day you might be immersed in UI designs in Adobe Fireworks, QAing new features, spec-ing out ideas, and always, always using the site to think of ways we can improve it.

We also need Product Managers who can help us go from big to big-time – a natural leader whose background straddles the (sometimes) conflicting realms of product design and engineering.

UI Designer

You will:
• Design intuitive, elegant interfaces that will be used by millions (~30 million/month to date)
• Work with our all-star engineering team to hone and iterate on your ideas
• Identify, analyze and prioritize new site features
• Manage the design/build/test/release process end-to-end.
• Strive for design perfection but love to release and iterate

Requirements (and we mean it!):
• Techie Cred: CS or similar degree so you can talk to our enginerds about Python, map reduce jobs, and naive Bayesian algorithms without a translator.
• Design Chops: While Yelp PMs hold technical degrees, we’re also passionate about design and have either schooling or significant experience building beautiful sites or apps. You should, too.
• Passion about the Space: You love the world of social networking, local search and consumer websites.
• Non-Nerd Empathy: You’re interested in FriendFeed, Twitter, etc. as much as the next nerd, but you also recognize that you’re designing for a non-techie audience.
• A Conditional Love for Yelp: Like a BFF or a tee ball coach, you should love us but also be able to tell us what we’re doing wrong. You’ll need to be able to dish out the criticism here and take it, too.
• A Need for Speed: Daily release cycle? Bring it!

UI Designer
You will:
• Be responsible for making sure the usability and appearance of the site is world class
• Play a key role in the visual design of new features launching on the site
• Have significant creative freedom and the ability to experiment with new designs
• Strive for design perfection but love to release and iterate

Requirements (and we mean it):
• Solid portfolio: A history of launching top-notch web interfaces
• Passion about the space: You love the world of design and are always keeping on top of the most recent design and usability improvements
• Can-do attitude: Will go the extra mile to launch the best possible design
• Ability to solve design problems, not just paint pretty pictures
• This isn’t a coding role, but we’d expect a familiarly with HTML, CSS, AJAX, prototype.js, jQuery, etc.

Send us examples of some of your design accomplishments and why you want to join the Yelp Team.
