Today in Sports History: 4/5/1993

There is a ton of stuff happening in sports today – opening day for baseball, the NCAA national championship game, Tiger Woods talks with the media at Augusta, and McNabb gets traded to the Redskins.

Hell, I’m tired already.

Well, this day lives in infamy as well for many of us old school Michigan basketball fans – you know what I’m talking about; April 5th 1993, the “Fab Five” took the court against the North Carolina Tar Heels and Chris Webber has the biggest brain lapse of all time – calls a timeout.

The North Carolina Tar Heels went on to win the National Championship under the guidance of Dean Smith that night in New Orleans’ Superdome.

North Carolina had clawed back from a 67-63 hole to take a 73-71 lead when Webber, arguably the most heavily-touted of Michigan’s “Fab Five,” rebounded a missed free throw with 20 seconds left. The power forward pushed the ball across midcourt, stopping in front of Michigan’s bench. In a panic, he called for a hurried timeout with 11 seconds on the clock. The problem with that tactic? The Wolverines didn’t have a timeout to spare, and were hit with a technical foul.

Donald Williams sunk two free throws for the technical and another two after an intentional foul, icing the 77-71 victory for North Carolina. “I just called the timeout and that probably cost us the game,” said Webber in the locker room.

Despite the gaffe, Webber went on to become the number one overall pick in the 1993 NBA draft, traded to the Golden State Warriors for Anfernee Hardaway and three draft picks. He also showed a great sense of humor after establishing the Timeout Foundation to help disadvantaged children. [via]
