Sunglasses can encapsulate the epitome of cool and make a bold fashion statement – particularly if you’re sporting a pair of Ray-Bans or Oakleys. But what good are they if you don’t look after them properly?

Avoid the usual inconveniences of poorly-looked-after sunnies, scratched lenses, and broken arms, and keep yourself looking cool with a properly maintained pair of shades.

Taking Care of the Lenses

It’s a common dilemma that all bespectacled folk have attempted to resolve at some time in our lives. There’s a bit of dirt or a smudge on your lens, so you exhale a mouthful of fog onto the lens and wipe the debris away with your shirt. It’s a two-fold bad idea.

First, you’re cleaning your sunnies with your shirt. Secondly, you could accidentally rub your lenses with a polyester or Lycra blend – abrasive fabrics which can diminish the anti-glare coating or worse, scratch your lenses beyond repair.

Gently massaging the lens with good quality linen, cotton, or microfibre cloth is the only gentle touch it needs, and it works wonders.

Spit Is No Substitute

If you don’t have the proper lens cleaner or solution, don’t use any old water-based substitute; spit and Scrumpy simply won’t do the trick. The best thing to do is to wet your lenses in a sink with warm water and pump hand soap on the lenses – detergents are particularly effective and gentle and lubricate the lenses to remove debris and dirt. And because the soap is water soluble, it leaves no residue, so you can wipe any excess water away with a paper hand towel.

Hard and Soft Cases

The reality is that no sunglasses are damage proof, so ideally you should invest in an effective protective case. A good case is the perfect solution to keeping your sunglasses safe – when said glasses aren’t resting snugly on your face, of course. There are two types of protective cases: hard and soft.
As the name suggests, hard cases protects your sunglasses from virtually anything – not only dust, sand, water, and other inconveniencing muckiness, but also from accidental falls. And we’ve all sat down and wondered where we left our glasses, only to realise that we’re sitting on them. Only now, the arm’s all bent and the lens has popped out. That’s why you need hard, durable cases for hard, durable situations.

Soft cases are perfectly fine for protecting your shades from water, sand, and dust, but obviously don’t possess the robustness of hard cases and won’t protect them from any mechanical damage. Soft cases are effective at preventing the lenses from getting scratched, unless you’re particularly cautious about where you put them.

They’re also a little more practical than hard cases as they take up less space, plus they can be more easily carried around in your pocket – although both types of cases come with belt rings so you can strap them to your waist.

Dirty Nose

The surface of the nose pads on your sunglasses are usually made from a special plastic or acetate that generally makes them pretty resistant to natural facial oils and dirt. Dirt can, however, get secreted between the nose pads. If this happens, soap them for a few hours in warm water to loosen the residue build-up, then gently brush away the unwanted dirt with a soft bristle brush or toothbrush.

On And Off

And it may sound like teaching your granny to suck eggs, but it’s best to use both hands when putting on and taking off your sunglasses. When you put them on, gently grasp the frame arms of your glasses with equal pressure and carefully slide them on, lifting them to our ears. Use the same grip to remove them, sliding them up and forward.
