This annual ritual is particularly popular in northern climes because houses are shut tight all winter. The first warm days of spring are ideal for opening the windows and doors and giving the house a good airing out while it is being cleaned.
To do a thorough job, you should plan for your spring cleaning to take at least one week; longer if you plan to revitalize the outside of your house as well. The job will go smoother if you tackle one room at a time.
In the Kitchen
-  Move the refrigerator so that you can vacuum and mop behind and underneath it. If the coils in the back aren’t enclosed, be sure to vacuum them as well.
- Â Empty the freezer and refrigerator compartments. Clean all of the shelves and bins with a mild detergent solution and rinse well.
- Â Move the stove and clean behind and underneath it. Remove and clean all of the burner and oven knobs, burner covers, and drip pans.
- Â Clean the oven unless it automatically cleans itself.
- Â Unplug and clean all countertop appliances.
- Â Remove everything from the countertops and thoroughly scrub them. Use an old toothbrush to remove crumbs or debris from corners.
- Â Remove everything from each cabinet; wipe down the inside shelves and the outside of the cabinet doors, including the knobs. If your pots and pans hang in the open, wash them or run them through the dishwasher.
- Â Wash the curtains. Toss them in the dryer to remove the wrinkles and re-hang them while they are still damp.
- Â Remove and clean all light fixtures.
- Â Wash the windows.
- Â Sweep and mop the floor.
In the Bathroom
- Â Empty the medicine chest and toss everything that has expired. Clean the shelves before replacing the items.
- Â Remove and clean the vent.
- Â Wash the shower doors or shower curtain.
- Â Clean the bathtub and/or shower. Spray the shower head with vinegar water to remove mineral deposits.
- Â Clean all mirrors.
- Â Wash the curtains and the windows.
- Â Scrub the toilet.
- Â Sweep and mop the floor.
In the Living Room
-  Clean the window treatments according to the manufacturer’s directions.
- Â Wash the windows.
- Â Remove and clean all picture frames, books, clocks, knick-knacks, lamps and lamp shades, and any other decorative objects.
- Â Dust and polish all bookshelves and wood furniture.
- Â Vacuum the furniture. Wash throw pillows and furniture covers.
- Â Clean the TV screen and stereo components.
- Â Thoroughly vacuum and steam clean the carpet. Otherwise, sweep and mop the floor.
In Each Bedroom
- Â Vacuum the mattress and flip it over. This will even out the weight and maximize its lifespan.
-  Wash all linens and pillows. Don’t forget to wash dust ruffles and mattress pads. Feather pillows can be tossed in the dryer on low heat or hung outside on a clothesline. Send non-washable items to the dry cleaner.
- Â Remove everything from each dresser drawer and vacuum the drawers. Dust and polish all dressers and nightstands.
- Â Clean the window treatments. Wash or dry clean drapes or vacuum blinds.
- Â Wash the windows and wipe down the doors.
- Â Pack away winter clothing and clean the shelves and floor of each closet.
Throughout the House
- Â Clean the furnace and the air conditioning filters.
- Â Clean all light switch plates, doorknobs, radiator covers, and any other item you may have overlooked.
- Â Wash down walls with a solution of TSP and warm water. Rinse well. Wallpaper can be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment.
- Â Air out the basement. Sweep and mop the floor.
- Â Wash all storm windows and exterior windows. Power wash the deck, patio, and house siding.
