When you run a business online, you may be living under a false sense of security and believe that you are at a lesser risk from crime than a brick and mortar shop. However, this could not be further from reality – there is a whole array of potential problems and threats that could decimate your business, and it is important that you take measures to protect the hard work that you have put into building your own online empire.

Fortunately, it does not have to be a complicated task, because there are a few easy steps you can take to ensure that you can work without any risks.

Here, we look at some of these steps in a little more detail.

Make sure that your staff are trained

The actions of your employees can be one of the biggest risks for your online business. If they have not received adequate training in regards to using the internet and your business network in a safe and secure manner, then you may face issues that could have otherwise been avoided.

There are a few policies that you should enforce to make sure that your workers do not put your online business at risk, including – not using personal websites on company equipment, blocking spam senders, and not opening email attachments unless they can verify the sender or the source.   In addition, it is imperative that they use complicated passwords involving a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters, and ensuring that such passwords are updated on a regular basis and are not shared with others.

Keep software up to date

Keeping the software that you use on your devices up to date is essential for the prevention of security risks. Obsolete software raises the risk that the device will become a target for cybercriminals. That's why you should upgrade both your security software and the software installed on your device on a regular basis. Set all your software programs to automatically install updates to save time and prevent them from being forgotten about.  This will make it a lot harder for hackers to access your computer network and website. A Cybersecurity Solutions company will be able to advise you with making sure everything is up to date.

Back up frequently

Regular backups are one of the most effective ways of protecting your website and your data. When you have safely encrypted and stored copies of your critical data, you can quickly recover them all in the event of a cyber attack. It is advised that you keep your copies off-site. This way, even if your servers are hacked, your data will be secure. Instead of saving your files in the cloud, save them and keep them on and offline, on external hard drives, or even on CDs.

Understanding how to safeguard your online business from possible security threats can be key to your success. If you don't want to waste precious time and resources or damage your company's credibility, you need to pay attention to security. With only a few easy measures, you can make sure your business equipment, data and network are safe and stable.
