London is a fantastic city with many activities on offer day and night, which means taking a trip there is a must do for any avid sightseer. The capital of the United Kingdom, London has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with a vast mix of culture, heritage, and history.
What can we do
It’s perhaps easier to say ‘what can’t you do’ in London as the options are endless. There is something to do for any age, race, and nationality because it’s such a vibrant and welcoming place.
The London Eye, the iconic riverside observation wheel which opened New Year’s Eve 1999, attracts millions of visitors every year. Buckingham Palace is a firm favorite with everyone, young and old; it’s often where you see the British Royal Family as this is where the Queen primarily resides. Down the river Thames from the palace is where you can see the beautiful Tower Bridge, which is the suspension bridge built in the 1800’s and visited by approximately 40000 people every day.
Ways to travel to London
London has an extensive and reliable travel network, and this is one of the reasons it’s so popular with the rest of the world because of its accessibility. There are five main airports serving London: Gatwick, Heathrow, Stanstead, London City, and Luton. Luton is the airport furthest away, meaning you’d need to rent a car from a reputable company such as Advantage Rent a Car if you want to go into the city.
There is a huge rail network that can be used to visit most surrounding areas of the central city of London, and then you have the connecting subway links meaning that no part of London is inaccessible.
The bus links are also excellent, meaning that you can catch a bus day or night to travel all over London. There is also the traditional double-decker open-top buses that transport you around the major sightseeing destinations giving you a verbal guided tour as you go.
Home from Home
The best places to stay in London are naturally in the heart of the city, but this also means they come with a premium price. Some of the best hotels in London are also the most expensive in Europe with the like of The Dorchester and The Ritz setting you back thousands of dollars a night.
If you don’t have that kind of money to spend, then there are less luxurious hotels and B&B’s that can be found on the outskirts of the city. There is also the choice of staying in Airbnb properties where you rent other peoples homes out for a duration through their website.
As with any big city or town, London has its darker side, but if you use your common sense, then you are perfectly safe. Make sure you plan a route home before you leave for day trips, only use registered cabs to move around the city, don’t walk alone at night and be vigilant. Also remember that in the UK, they drive on the left-hand side of the road, so if you do use car rental, make sure you follow the correct road rules.
There is so much fun to be had in London whether you go for a day trip or spend weeks exploring it. Take advantage of all the free things that can be done and seen in London too so you can start saving for a night in The Ritz!
