Most people know that self-esteem is vital for just about every area of your life from your personal relationships to your career.   You aren’t just happier as a result of feeling good about yourself, but you are more capable of handling life’s challenges.

When life gets you feeling down, a positive self-image helps you weather the storm rather than feeling ridden with anxiety.  Yet despite how many people know self-esteem is essential, what’s less common knowledge, is how to go about attaining it.

When it comes to self-esteem an alarming four out of five people, say that they would like to change something about themselves.  So how do you go about improving your self-esteem? Take a look at some of the most effective methods.

Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

One of the worst things that you can do for yourself is to compare yourself to someone else.  No two people are the same, nor are their backgrounds. Someone may have a seemingly “perfect” body which leads you to question your own.  The truth is that you don’t know if they’ve undergone surgeries or had any sort of enhancements done.  

Instead of looking through social media accounts or magazines that make you feel inferior, put them away.  The last thing you need is anything to make you feel less than you’re worth. Get rid of anything in your life that makes you feel tempted to compare yourself.  You’ll feel your self-image transform as a result.

Accept Compliments

People’s first reaction is often to reject a compliment by deflecting it with a self-deprecating joke. However, all you’re doing is discrediting yourself.  Instead of robbing yourself of joy and recognition, accept compliments.

Try to practice the art of saying “Thank you.”  Over time, with enough practice, it will feel natural.  Instead of your first response being to back out of a nice comment, a “thank you” will come out naturally.

Use Words Of Affirmation

Words have the power to completely transform your life.  Use them for good. When you look at yourself in the mirror, tell yourself things which will make you feel good about yourself.

Each time that you feel the urge to criticize or bring yourself down, instead, say something nice.  Try to bring yourself up using words of affirmation.
Some people find that writing down words of affirmations and posting it on the mirror is very effective.  That way each time that you look at yourself, you have a “script.”  Try to tell yourself things that apply to your life right now. Such as “I am becoming more and more successful at work” or, “Every day I move closer to my fitness goals.”  Don’t be afraid to change up your affirmations as often as you like so that they’re still applicable.
