To shield against potential cyber attacks, one must use multi-layered security since no one layer is guaranteed to protect PC. Below are key steps of cyber essentials one needs to have in place to protect against cyber attacks and successfully defend against malware.

Firewall Installation:

Firewall is the foundation of cybersecurity. As the name suggests, it acts as a wall and filters the information that comes from the internet to your PC. It can be enacted as hardware, software, or a combination of both. A firewall can be manually configured and whatever information is commanded to be blocked, does not reach your PC. Although various programs require Firewall to be turned off, it is always recommended to turn the Firewall on permanently.

Antivirus Software:

Antivirus is another foundation for ensuring the security of your system from malware. These are software that is installed and protect your PC from any malicious activity such as a virus or a Trojan. Whenever any file is moved into your PC from an external source such as internet or USB drive, antivirus window pops up notifying you of potentially threatening programs and action can be taken to remove those particular files from your PC.

Anti-Spyware Software:

Spyware is software install on your PC without you knowing about them. The term spyware is fairly easy to understand. It falls under the category of cyber threats as they spy on your activities and amass personal information such as passwords, credit card numbers, and bank account details. Having an anti-spyware in place detects all such programs and blocks them from operating. There are various anti-spyware available online that not only bulwark against spyware but also against viruses.

Complex Passwords:

Although a complex password is not guaranteed to protect you from cyber threats; however, they are hard for cybercriminals to decode. Security experts have concluded that a simple password can be figured out in less than six minutes. Therefore, a password that combines lower and upper cases, a password that includes numbers as well as alphabets, and one that is longer is also a security measure one should have in place.

Browsers’ Security Settings:

Modern web browsers come with security settings that also guard against cyber threats one way or the other. It is always recommended to keep a check on the security settings and to amend as per the desired level.

In conclusion, your PC needs to have cyber essentials in place to protect against potential cyber threats. Installing firewall, antivirus software, anti-spyware software, making use of complex passwords, and keeping a regular check on the security settings of your web browser protect your PC from malware and cyber attacks.
