Firstly, there is the distress of seeing your child so upset and potentially not wanting to go to school. Get to the bottom of what has happened – The first thing you always need to do is get to the bottom of what has happened. Once you have done this, you can get down to the specifics to find out what has happened.

Play advocate – Playing advocate can be a good way to get to the truth if your child has been telling a few lies to begin with. You should say that you are going to write down everything your child has just said so that you can speak with the teacher. If your child has been bending the truth, they will now come clean because they fear it escalating. Nevertheless, if your child is indeed being honest, this also serves the purpose of showing you care.

Meet the teacher – You then need to schedule a meeting with the teacher in question so you can get to the bottom of what has been going on. It is vital that you do not go into the meeting all guns blazing and accusing the teacher of acting incorrectly. The best thing to do is give the teacher a chance to explain without giving her or him the idea you are holding them at fault. The last thing you want to do is put the teacher on the defensive, which can prevent the conversation from being effective.

Reach out to other parents – While you should not go around bad mouthing a teacher or accusing him/her of not doing their job properly, you can ask parents how their child is finding school and if they have commented regarding any specific classes. This will enable you to see whether the issue is further afield or not.

If you follow the steps that have been provided, you should, hopefully, be able to get to the bottom of what has happened to your child at school. Before taking any sort of action, it is vital to make sure the issue actually does lie with the teacher. You don’t want to dive straight in only to find that you have totally misconstrued the situation.
