Driving drunk is an incredibly serious offense, but it can also lead to absolute devastation. Every single day, around twenty eight people die in motor accidents involving an alcohol-impaired driver in the United States alone; This is more than one death every hour of the day. Most people say that they can drive on one drink, and while this might be allowed by law, it certainly isn’t recommended. Even one drink can severely impair your reflexes, increasing the chances of an accident. Because of this, you shouldn’t ever get behind the wheel after you’ve had a drink. If you have found that you want to drive when you’ve been drinking, here are some tips to stop you.

1. Stay Where You Are

If you’re at a party, ask the host if you can crash at their place, so that you don’t have to worry about getting home later on. Just make sure that no one is expecting you home, or you could cause unnecessary worry. If you’re out on the town for the night, book a hotel near your favorite bar or club, so that you’ll be able to walk there when you’re finished and can stay put until morning.

2. Choose A Designated Driver

If a group of you are heading out for the night, have a chat and see if anyone wouldn’t mind being the designated driver for the night, and staying sober. Just remember, although they may have agreed to not drinking now, their willpower might run out, so keep an eye on them and make sure they don’t drink all night. If they start drinking, find another ride home.

3. Call A Taxi

Although taxis can get pricey in the early hours of the morning, they are usually your safest bet for getting home. They are also massively cheaper than a fine from the police or a compensation claim if you cause an accident. You can usually find a row of taxis outside bars and clubs, so you don’t even have to worry about calling a taxi yourself.
