Cryptocurrencies opened up a whole new world when it comes to finances. Volatile in value, mostly unregulated, and secretive, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum are beginning to reshape the way investors, well, invest. Enter the ICO – Initial Coin Offering.

According to a 2017 Coindesk Report, the second quarter of 2017 saw ICO funding for entrepreneurs grow to three times greater than traditional venture capital funding. Though there is risk when it comes to getting involved with ICOs, investors know there is tremendous value and possible payoff. Many are willing to dabble in this modern and mysterious method of investing for a chance to hit it big.

Some financial experts aren’t convinced of the power of the ICO just yet, however. Jordan Belfort, of Wolf of Wall Street fame has gone so far as to call ICOs the “biggest scam ever,” and even entire governments are labeling it illegal and disruptive and have banned the practice completely.

Though it’s life span so far has only been a few years and its start has been rocky, ICOs have shown significant growth in 2017 and currently stands as a $3 billion industry. Take a look at this infographic for more on how cryptocurrencies are changing the face of investments and what that means for the future of entrepreneurship.
