Organizing a trip isn’t an easy process. When you’re in a car for hundreds or even thousands of miles, it can get extremely tiring, and there’s usually something you realize you’ve forgotten to do or take as soon as you pull away. Yet there’s always ways to make elements of it better. Follow these quick tips to give yourself a good head start when long hauling in your car.

Pack backup items

You’ll always need to keep a spare tyre in your trunk. If this has recently been used and you haven’t replaced it yet, make that the first point on your travel to-do list. Similarly, if you still have it in the back, check that it isn’t punctured or flat. Pulling out a spare tyre thinking you’ve saved the day only to find it’s useless will be the worst disaster on the side of the road.

You might not think you need it, but take a spare map with you on long drives as the one in the car may be outdated or simply lost. Similarly, you’ll never know when your satnav may break down on you or lose it’s signal in unknown areas.

Take regular truck stops

This is especially important if you’ll be driving longer than a day. By taking a rest stop as it gets dark you’ll replenish your batteries and make the journey a lot safer, despite taking more time. However this won’t feel so bad as sleeping will allow you to take a break from the continuous drive.

Know how to handle other vehicles

The early morning is the safest time to drive. But driving safely from here on out applies to both you and everyone else on the road. Always use your turning signals or indicators to clearly communicate on the roads. Don’t force yourself into car streams and only overtake when you have a large enough stretch in front of you to stop any chance of a collision. When a bigger vehicle passes you, you may feel like screaming, but keeping to any restrictions will keep you safe in terms of the physical and legal. Even if anything does go awry, services such as a truck accident lawyer exist and specialise in roadside dealings. It’s good to know any careless drivers with special insurance teams on their side can be matched.

Use smaller roads

Whilst a lot of people are scared about using motorways due to concerns over speed and safety, there’s a reason they’re the most heavily congested roads in the world. People like to use motorways and main routes because they’re straight roads that’ll take you all the way to your destination.

Sometimes using minor roads can make a journey longer, after all they’ve earned the nickname ‘scenic routes,’ but it’s good investment on an insane distance. Taking the time to plan your car journey out amongst smaller roads and back ways will free up congestion and traffic times. These quick tips are key to making travel smarter and safer.
