If you, as a solo musician or a band have been afforded the luxury of performing at a gig then you need to make the most of it. You will be able to showcase your music to a bunch of people who could potentially turn into fans. There is a multitude of things you need to do in preparation, so be ready to put in the effort and work to ensure you music is remembered for a long period of time. It could be what takes you to the next level. Music can be taste based, so there will likely be people who don’t like your music. But that’s fine. All you can do is facilitate people in making the most informed choice possible, and you can do this by delivering the best possible performance. You must analyse the venue first, plan everything out and don’t leave anything to chance. These tips can help you ensure it all goes well. You may have thought about some of them already, but they can give you the ideas you need to take your gig to the next level. Good luck with it!

Use Memorabilia

You need money to fund what you do. So sell memorabilia. Ensure you do this at a profit, you need to make sure you make and not lose money. Get your cost margins out and get to business. You can use a cd replication to make a load of your cd’s, which you can sell at the concert’s end. Think about selling t-shirts, and other funky things you can think of. Emblazon them with your logo, you will have some form of branding to go with it so make sure you use it for the best possible impact. This is a chance to make some money, but to also get your music out there and ensure your brand is recognised. Place the stall somewhere that cannot be ignored. This way you’re more likely to catch interested passers by. Advertise your music, tell people you are available for more gigs and give them links to numbers and websites where they can book you or ask you more questions. For those just starting out this can be the beginning of something big so long as you manage it all properly.

Recce The Venue

You must ensure that you go to the venue prior to the gig date. Check out their systems, their connections and fittings. What speakers do they use, are the lighting systems set up properly? These are the kind of questions you need to be asking yourself. You must ensure everything is right before you get to the venue on the actual night. You don’t want to be caught unawares by anything that could mean you don’t get the night you wanted. Things go wrong all the time, sure, but you can mitigate this by checking out the venue before hand. Speak to the stage manager, to the person who has organised the event and make sure you are both on the same page regarding everything so far. What time the gig starts and ends, what kind of reception you’ll get, IE how many people will be turning up. You should also be inquiring whether there is any kind of security present at the venue, this can be important as they can ensure your safety. These are all things you need to know prior to the event taking place.

Plan Your Set To The Minute

You need to plan in some flex time. Things could happen that interrupt your set, such as someone jumping onto the stage and being kicked out by security for example. These things eat into valuable seconds and minutes. However, other than a few minutes of flex time, make sure you plan your set accordingly. Never go out and wing it, or you could end up in a situation you don’t want to be in. If you are in a band ensure you are all on the same page. Make sure you rehearse and that everyone knows what is happening and when. Your song list needs to be known by everyone. If everything is planned out you are effectively stopping any potential issues from occurring. Mistakes on your part will result in a rowdy and annoyed crowd. After all, they paid to come and see you play, so make sure you give them your monies worth. Remember that you should always give your best, and you will give you best if you have sufficiently planned the night out.
