Other than bathrooms, the kitchen is the dirtiest room in your house. It’s actually arguable that your kitchen could be even dirtier than your bathroom. That’s probably not a reality you want to come to terms with. The reason is because there are so many hot spots in your kitchen that don’t get cleaned as much as your bathroom because it doesn’t really cross your mind.
Luckily, once you’re informed about the places in your kitchen that harbor germs, you’ll be more likely to pay more attention to them in the future and that means that your kitchen will no longer be a place that is technically grosser that your bathroom, it will be a place you’re happy to spend time in because you know it’s clean and safe for everyone. Do you know the hot spots? Here are just a few:
Your Kitchen Sponge
Prepare to be extremely grossed out. You sponge just might be the dirtiest thing in your entire kitchen. If you think about it, you use it to wash everything, you squeeze it out, but it still sits damp on the counter, harvesting bacteria, and putting you and your family at risk.
The most common of kitchen sponges will have traces of E. coli in them, so just be aware of how old your sponge is, and buy one that can be replaced easily or at least thrown in the dishwasher every time a load is ready to be washed.
If you’re like the average homeowner, your kitchen counters are probably filled with clutter and other items that have permanent residence in a particular corner. Over time, dust, crumbs, and splashes of who knows what hide themselves behind these items. You might have a good habit of wiping down your counters often, but if your counters are a granite or a darker material that is hard to spot things on, you might not know when cleaning needs to be done.
It’s actually best that your granite countertops get professionally cleaned once every year or two, so keep that in mind as you go through your daily tasks of making sure everything is in order. Counters are high contact and are easier to forget about than other things, so they’re a hot spot, for sure.
The Nooks and Crannies
You are probably good at sweeping and mopping your floors, but every once in awhile, a deeper clean needs to be done. This should include pulling out your appliances like your stove and your refrigerator to get all of the crumbs, dust, and spills that have accumulated over time. When you clean these places, you’ll feel better about the overall feel of your home. The dirt is in the details, so get out your toothbrush, and go to town.
