Nothing tastes quite like a well-prepared, well-cooked, Texas-style barbeque beef brisket. If it is seasoned and allowed to cook slowly in a smoker or in the oven, you will have a tasty main dish for dinner, and you may also be left with some pieces for the next day’s lunch.

Preparing a delicious brisket at home requires a little bit of time to make sure that you properly prepare the ingredients. Whether you are a seasoned cook (no pun intended) or want to try your hand at this culinary delight for the first time, here is a simple-to-follow, can’t-miss brisket recipe.

Preparing the Brisket Rub  
In order to make this recipe, you need to have the following ingredients available in order to make a rub. The rub consists of various dry ingredients like salt or sugar, pepper, and some signature spices. There is no wrong way to prepare a rub, so think outside the box.

Basic Ingredients for Rub:
2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

1/4 cup chili powder

1 tablespoon ground cumin

1/2 tablespoon dry mustard

1/2 tablespoon dry wasabi powder

2 tablespoons smoked paprika

1 tablespoon kosher salt

5- to 6-pound brisket, trimmed, that has about a 1/4-inch thick layer of fat.

To prepare the rub, mix together the spices in a small bowl. Take the mixture and rub the entire brisket on both sides. Place it on a baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap and let the brisket stand in the refrigerator overnight (or one hour if you’re in a hurry).

In addition to the dry rub, you can add a sauce (called a mop):
1 bay leaf

1/4 cup dark brown sugar

4 cloves of garlic

4 12-oz bottles of dark beer

A large sweet onion

1 diced red chili

Salt and pepper

Combine these ingredients in a medium saucepan. Use salt and pepper to season the mixture while cooking over medium heat for about 15 minutes. Remove the mop from the heat, take out the bay leaf, and allow it to cool slightly before putting aside. You should prepare the mop just before you are ready to cook the brisket.

With the ingredients ready to go, put the brisket in a smoker or a roaster and cover. Place into a preheated oven set at 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) and cook for five hours. In the last hour, slather the brisket with the mop sauce, add 1/4 inch of beef stock to the dish, and return to the oven, covered, for about one more hour. Prepare your favorite barbecue sides, and you are ready to eat!
