Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy. All four fell victim to a presidential assassination.
While only four presidents were actually killed, there have been seven other assassination attempts. While assassination attempts were made on every one in four presidents, there used to be little concern for the President of the United States. While today a threatening letter to the president can land you in jail, they used to be a non-issue. Andrew Jackson used to endorse his letters, and would even have them published in the Washington Globe occasionally!
Did you know that the Secret Service was originally formed to seek out counterfeit money? It was only in 1901, after William McKinley was shot, that the Secret Service started providing systematic, continuous protection to the president. Today the Secret Service protects the president, the vice president, and the president and vice president elects. They also offer protection to their immediate family members, all former presidents, and any visiting heads of foreign governments.
