It can be very uncomfortable to negotiate a raise or higher salary. A significant portion of both men and women report feeling anxiety at the thought of trying to negotiate a raise—almost 40%. While more than half of men will negotiate a starting salary, only a tiny 7% of women will. What’s important to remember is that it’s up to you to make sure you get the pay you deserve.

When negotiating your salary, plan everything to a T: Know your company’s compensation policies, keep score by maintaining documents that track the things you want to highlight, and time it just right. These can help you show what you’ve done, rather than just telling, and will make a memorable (and favorable) impression.
