When you get to be 24, life can slow down a little bit. It’s not all about partying anymore. You start to care so much more about getting a good night’s sleep. You opt for a cup of hot tea rather than drinking a glass of wine at the end of the night to eliminate the risk of a headache when you get to work in the morning. While it might seem like it gets a tad boring, here are five specific reasons why 24 is the new 21. And you should own it.
1. You’re not as annoying.
Don’t try to tell me how awesome you were at 21 years old. No one is awesome at 21 years old. We were all annoying. We were all obsessed with drinking. We were always out and when we weren’t out, we updated our Facebook status about how lame we were for not being out. Like I said, 21 is an annoying age. But when you get to be 24, you realize how to handle yourself a little better. You know that tequila makes you get fighty. You know vodka will make you tell secrets to complete strangers. You finally learned that absinthe is never a good idea. What I’m trying to say is you are better at handling your booze when you turn 24.
2. You stop being a “woo” girl.
When you are 24, you don’t get as pumped up about the little things anymore. For example, a shot of vodka makes you feel sick rather than excites you. When you’re 21, everything deserves a high pitched “woo.” When you’re 24, you learn to enjoy your beer without the extra attention seeking noises. Trust me, everyone around you does too.
3. You have some work experience under your belt.
This is one of the best things about being 24. When you are 21, you are either still in college or about to graduate. You don’t know what the real world is like and it’s a totally huge slap in the face. Nobody wants you to work for them because you lack experience. Well, stand back y’all. 24-year-olds have experience. We may not have a lot, but we got a little. And we’re definitely more experienced than the 21-year-olds of the world.
4. You don’t sweat the small stuff anymore.
21-year-olds are the worst about overreacting. I mean, everything is a big deal. Everything. A boy dumped you. Your best friend likes a boy you liked a long time ago and you’re mad because he’s obviously off limits even though you two never dated in the first place. When you turn 24, it just gets to be a hassle to sweat all the small stuff. A boy dumped you? His loss. My friend likes the boy I had a crush on in high school? I don’t really care. You learn to appreciate other things in life. Like food. Or your dog.
5. Boys become a side dish and life becomes the main course.
When you are 21, it’s all about having a boyfriend. It’s just the worst thing in the world when your friends are all updating their statuses to “in a relationship” and you’re over there with your “single” status. When you get to be 24, you don’t even care so much as to even put your relationship status visible on Facebook. You stop looking everywhere for a potential boyfriend and you start appreciating life for what it is. You focus on your work, your family, and your friends. If a boy comes along, great. If he doesn’t, that’s fine too. See? Being 24 is definitely the new and improved 21.
