In November 2012, Colorado and Washington made history by legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, a Schedule 1 drug—meaning it has a high potential for drug abuse and offers no accepted medical use. Nevertheless, marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the U.S. Who’s using it? In 2009, 29 million Americans (ages 12 and over) said they’d used marijuana at least once in the previous year. About 50 percent of Americans believe marijuana should be legalized already. In 2011, 663,032 people were arrested for marijuana possession—certainly these people wish marijuana was legalized.
Some celebrities that make the “famous and stoned” list include Justin Bieber, Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga. It’s also worth noting that 18 states and the District of Columbia allow the use of medicinal marijuana, and California was the first to do so.
