When a website is first starting out, there are a lot of choices to make. From layout to content to social networking, there are so many things to worry about that web hosting and domains shouldn’t be one of them. For beginners, finding a web host and securing a domain can be a bit daunting, but they will be the foundation that a website is built on. Finding the right web host is the first step to starting a successful website.

Where to Start

There are many types of web hosting for a lot of different needs. Knowing what services are out there will help a webmaster decide which will be best for their website. Here are a few of the most common options:

  • Cloud Hosting – There is a lot of flexibility in cloud hosting. The user buys system time and space, both of which can be increased or decreased quickly and easily.
  • Dedicated Server – Dedicated servers are exactly what they sound like: a server is leased out to a single user and isn’t shared at all. This is the ideal option for any website that makes money. The information in dedicated servers are secure and cannot be viewed by anyone who doesn’t have access to the server– in basic web hosting, servers are shared by multiple users and therefore are less secure.
  • Windows VPS – Virtual private servers (VPS) is similar to a dedicated server, though it uses virtualization technology to host multiple private servers on a single physical server. So there are multiple servers which act like dedicated servers that are simply connected to the same hardware.
  • Colocation Facilities – This option is best for experienced webmasters. All of the system administration is left up to the user, the host merely provides internet connection, power, and climate control.

Finding a good web host requires some shopping around. Companies like AccuWebHosting offer an array of packages and services depending on the user’s needs. The best web host will supply continuous, reliable service and be easy to communicate with if there is ever a problem. Of course prices are a factor as well, but often times to cheapest option includes poor customer service. Paying a little more for a trustworthy and helpful web host will help a lot, especially if the business or individual is relying on the site as a source of income.

So what’s next? Once the webmaster has found the perfect host it’s time to start building and designing the website, either with a template or building it from the ground up, and then publishing content and getting people to see it. It’s better to keep the design of a website simple and professional, but still unique. The content on a site should draw people in, and everything else is just extra. Having great content and a good looking site won’t accomplish anything unless people see it, though. Using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook will get people interested in the website and expand its audience. Once a website starts to grow, it’s important for the host to keep up. If performance drops during times with the most traffic, it might be time to upgrade service with the host or switch to a private or dedicated server.
