In 2012 there were 1,638,910 new American cancer cases. This is devastating when you consider that one in four deaths are caused by cancer, which is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. Environmental factors account for 75-80 percent of cancer cases and deaths in the U.S. The Eastern region of the U.S. has more cancer cases when compared to the West. Many elements Americans are commonly exposed to cause cancer. Exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), chemicals used as flame retardants, leads to a higher risk of breast and thyroid cancer. Lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, and mesothelioma may be triggered by asbestos exposure.

You may be shocked to learn some common household items with cancer-causing carcinogens: carpet and upholstery shampoos, art supplies, air fresheners, artificially scented candles, and moth balls make the list. Do you own a couch that was made before 2004? It may contain PBDEs.

Do you think America is giving you cancer? To learn more about cancer in America and cancer-causing carcinogens we are commonly exposed to, take a look at the infographic below.
