Throughout 2012, many casinos had highs and lows in their stocks (most eventually ended on a high note at the end of the year, however) and saw fluctuations in customers coming through their doors. While some of that comes from the state of the economy and money being too tight for people to visit casinos, another phenomenon may be the cause. While casinos might have seen fewer customers, online casinos received a huge surge of members in 2012.

Why Has Online Gambling Become So Popular?

A study by the University of Iowa found that by increasing the number of casinos doesn’t guarantee more gamblers. Iowa seems to have found a saturation point where new locations won’t create new customers. On the other hand, it seems like online casinos are far from finding their own saturation point.

Online gambling began as a kind of fad, but has since expanded immensely. Previously, the online gambling phenomenon was evident in European countries and the United States. Online casino developers are now looking at expanding these trends into Asian countries and especially tapping into China’s booming economy.

One of the leading causes for the success of virtual casinos is the convenience. Mobile casino apps saw a huge rise in downloads in 2012, and are expected to continue to grow in 2013. By having casino games in their pocket, players don’t need to travel to an actual casino to receive  the same entertainment. While it may seem that casinos have reached a saturation point in some areas, online casinos and mobile gambling apps have become a new outlet for people to play.

Finding Online Casinos

Online and mobile casinos are great for casual players and experienced players alike. People who are just starting out can find mobile apps and enjoy games like slots, poker, blackjack, and more on their smartphone.

Some are apprehensive about starting online casino games because they don’t want to sacrifice the live casino experience. While there are differences in virtual and live games, online casinos have just as much to offer. Take a game of poker, for example. In a live game, opponents try to read each other’s moves and expressions to determine what they have in their hand. The same can be said for an online poker game: hesitation and long, drawn out turns, overly chatty players who offer unwanted advice, and folding quickly can all be indications of a player’s hand or experience level. There is just as much bluffing and technique in online poker as live poker, and plenty of strategies to explore.

While mobile casinos and online gambling has a promising future, casinos will still have plenty to offer to their customers. It’s not that online gambling will replace physical casinos, but can become integrated to the casino experience and strengthen the industry.
