Tips on How to Enjoy Your Retirement 2When you retire, it doesn’t mean that you have to spend your evenings alone or working at a retail store greeting customers. The second half of your life can be fulfilling, exciting, fun and enjoyable. There are so many ways to enjoy your retirement. Here are a few tested, tried, but time-tested ways that don’t require a lot of money. Remember that when you approach your fifties and sixties, it is not the end of the world.

Traveling
This is the time when you should think about traveling and exploring new places around the world. You could rent an RV and go on a cross country trip with someone of the same age group or your partner, if he or she is still alive. And boy, you should treat yourself to going on short cruises. I can guarantee that this would be an exhilarating experience for you and something that you will continue to do for a long time.

Volunteering
Keep busy by volunteering in a charitable cause. This is another way to feel rewarded and fulfilled and at the same time you will make a difference. Your volunteer efforts could be at your local church or in a non-profit organization that services the community. You could also offer your services to a local hospital, prison or park. Find something that you are good at and offer those services in the best possible way that you can. You have to love what you are doing in order to become passionate about it. You will improve or enhance someone’s life through listening, educating and motivating.

Starting a business
You are never too old to start a business. In fact, you can turn a hobby into a full blown business. If you always thought about using your hobby as a business, this is the perfect timing. It will provide an income to pay your bills, but also give you a chance to keep busy and productive. You will also be happier doing something that you really love. I think you should first seek professional advice, though before starting any kind of business.

Adopt a pet
If you have never been a pet owner, this may be the perfect time to devote your time to a furry feline. There are many shelters that would love to have you adopt one of their pets. Go to your local shelter and find an endearing pet that you can care for. If your neighbor has a pet, volunteer to pet sit while they are away. This will give you a chance to become more comfortable with owning a pet. You will be providing unconditional love to a needy pet. What could be more fulfilling? You could also volunteer at an animal shelter first before taking on the responsibility of being a pet owner.

Become a mentor
As a baby boomer, you have so much to offer the past generation. Try to hang around your grandchildren or the neighbor’s children as much as possible to impart your experience and knowledge. Most of them will greatly appreciate it. Many of their parents would be pleased to have you in their children’s lives as a role model. You can also become a volunteer at one of the local schools. If you love sports, you could become a volunteer coach or if you love arts and craft, you could teach a class. There are endless options to consider that will let you offer your extensive knowledge and experiences to enthusiastic young minds.

Join a club or support group
There are many clubs and support groups that you could join, depending on what your interests are. If you are a sports enthusiast, you could join a sports club. If your experience is in the field of psychology or therapy, you could offer your expertise in a support group setting. You also have the option of being on the other end of the spectrum by joining a group of retirees that just want to connect and stay in touch.

Here are 10 keys to having fun and a sense of accomplishment at retirement:

  • Get involved with a rewarding activity
  • Control your money
  • Maintain close family relationships
  • Keep socially active
  • Stay connected with friends
  • Watch your health carefully – stay active physically and mentally
  • Read more to stimulate your mind
  • Continue to grow and develop yourself. Life isn’t over when you are getting older. You still have to keep a sharp mind
  • Get involved in leisurely activities with other retirees, family members or friends
  • Rekindle old relationships and take up new interests

Retirement is the reward for a job well done. Take the time to think about the things you have always enjoyed but never had the time to do. These can be the best days of your life. Go out and find your happiness!
