I love cartoons and comics for various reasons and was eager to see what this show had to offer. I was a little worried that my 7 year old son, who gives me input on some games and videos that we review here at INOFtainment News, wouldn’t be a big fan. He seems to enjoy more of the humor based toons like Adventure Time, Regular Show and Gumball, so I assumed he’d lose interest and want to do something else… like actually play Kaijudo instead of watch it on TV. However, after the first episode “The Natural, Part 1” – he was hooked. The story was interesting and entertaining and we both enjoyed watching. He kept asking for more and more and we buzzed through all 5 episodes (while playing a couple rounds of Kaijudo too).
I give it 4 of 5 stars and would recommend it for kids around this age – there are some violent moments, this is not Sesame Street. If you want to check out the trailers or learn about the card game, go to kaijudo.com and take a peek. The stories are interesting in these first 5 episodes as you get to know the characters and the animation is solid.
Without revealing spoilers, I’ll just mention that the protagonist is a kid who is fatherless and is bullied at school. He and his friend are befriended by a more ‘popular’ girl at school and they bond over the saving of a spider during what appears to be a school lunch. They end up being transported to another universe full of mysterious and powerful creatures and begin a fun, crazy adventure which kicks off the entire series. It’s a nice tie in to the card games and as a marketing tool I think it really worked on my son. He’s even more interested in playing the card game now and has developed an affinity for some of the characters and creatures.
