It’s tough being a celebrity. There’s always a lot of pressure to travel to beautiful locales, get paid enormous sums of money and be admired by people all over the world. So it’s understandable that sometimes celebrities break down and need a little bit of what Patton Oswalt termed “pain go bye-bye juice.” Of course there’s a difference between having a couple drinks and getting so drunk one finds himself in the middle of a cornfield in Indiana with a cop breathing down his neck wishing he still had the card of that Indiana DUI attorney he met before he got loaded last night. That’s all fine and good if it happens once, but if it happens multiple times, well then said celebrity shouldn’t be surprised if they end up on a list like the one below.
This poor walking disaster has come a long ways since the remake of The Parent Trap. Who knew the slightly chubby redhead would spiral into a coke sniffing, courtroom queen in the span of a few years? Her multiple DUIs pale in comparison to the number of times she’s been in court on other charges including drug use and theft. She still generally gets decent reviews when she’s in a movie, but that might not last if she can’t keep her nose clean and put the bottle down.
Mel Gibson probably had one of the most notable run ins with the law in 2006. He was recorded spewing racial hatred and making obscene references to a female police officer. It wasn’t his first DUI arrest, but it will probably be his last given all the damage control his publicist and he had to do after the whole affair. To his credit, Gibson probably made the most post-DUI effort out of any celebrity on this list.
Jason Whaler is one of the few celebrities who have been able to parlay their drinking problems into a steady gig. Whaler appeared on Dr. Drew’s Celebrity Rehab 4 with the stated purpose of getting clean and possibly earning a college degree. Anything’s possible.
Most recently known for his work in Men In Black, Rip Torn was cited with his first DUI at the age of 75 in 2004. Luckily for him he was acquitted of that charge, but then later made the same boneheaded mistake in 2006. This time he wasn’t’ so lucky; the court slapped him with a $380 fine, and he lost his license for 90 days. At 77 years old, maybe it’s time maybe he should take the driving test again before getting his license back.
Billy Joel and DUI go together like mashed potatoes and gravy. It’s hard to separate the two. Unfortunately for the “piano man” he’s got more DUIs than Mitt Romney has “zingers,” and that’s saying a lot. His problem has gotten so bad that he was even outed for being a drunk by Elton John 2011. Well, if Sir Elton John could help Eminem, maybe there’s hope for Billy Joel yet.
