The famous Billy Joel seems to have gotten it right, only the good do die young. With a shocking trend of dying at the age of 27, substance abuse and drug addiction has taken many of our beloved musicians and actors.
Jimi Hendrix, who brought us psychedelic guitar licks and “All Along the Watchtower”, starting the “27” trend, met his fate after choking on his own vomit after ingesting 9 sleeping pills in 1970 at the age of 27. In the same year, the eclectic Janis Joplin was found in her hotel room dead from a heroin and alcohol overdose, at just 27 as well. To continue with the “27”s, Jim Morrison of the Doors overdosed the following year in 1971 of a heroin overdose. Starting to see a trend here? Heroin has been the leading cause of overdoses in celebrities. Kurt Cobain had traces of heroin as well as Valium in his body when he shot and killed himself. The legendary Amy Winehouse was on numerous drugs such as heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and alcohol- but, met her demise at 27 due to alcohol poisoning.
However, it's not just an age or being famous that will cause you to become addicted and die. With the amount of prescription pills being perscribed everyday, it's very easy to become addicted. Take Brittany Murphy and Heath Ledger for example, both of which were killed by the consumption of too many prescription drugs. Don't fall into these trends, success in recovery is more than getting sober, it is living sober.
