Recorded in 2010, about 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty and it is estimated that up to half a million of these people were children who were left homeless. With one out of six Americans now being enrolled in at least on government anti-poverty program, the same statistic of one out of six is used to describe the number of elderly Americans living below the federal poverty line.

So, how invisible are the poor? Only one out of ten Americans state that poverty or welfare should be a top issue addressed by the government. With such a low number of people thinking poverty is a main issue, the poor continue to remain in the shadows. An estimated 43% of Americans that were surveyed said they believe people living in poverty can always find a job if they really wanted to work. However, what issues are people facing that keep them below poverty? The lack of education, drug addictions, never saving money while borrowing too much of it, staying in a dead-end low-paying job if they’re even working, and being born into a poor family are all contributing factors to why people are poor in America.
