With the London Olympics fast approaching, it’s easy to forget that extensive preparations are already underway for the next Olympics in 4 years time.
But how different will that Olympics be from London 2012?
Stay tuned – you’re about to find out!
The Location
You can leave your wellies behind as the 2016 Olympics are being held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil!
It’s the first time the Olympic Games have been held in South America, and with an average August temperature of 23°C, it’s the perfect place to have your summer holiday!
Head to the famous Copacabana beach to catch some marathon swimming, the triathlon or the beach volleyball, and top up your tan while you watch!
When you’ve got a few hours to spare you can take a cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain, or check out the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer.
The Sports
Hang on to your golf clubs, as after a 112 year absence, golf returns to the Olympics in 2016!
To compete for a medal the competitors will have to complete a 72-hole individual stroke play tournament, with the lowest score winning the gold! Any ties will be decided by a three hole playoff.
A new golf-course is being built specially for the event, and Tiger Woods has vowed to try for a medal!
But golf won’t be the only new sport at the Olympics in 2016; golf will be joined by rugby which has also made the grade. Furthermore, the International Sailing Federation recently announced that windsurfing will now be dropped in favour of kite surfing.
In total the 2016 Olympics will feature 28 sports and 38 disciplines!
The Logo
The logo for the 2016 Olympics has already been revealed, and it’s formed of three figures embracing, with the famous Olympic rings beneath them.
The figures are meant to show Rio’s citizens embracing other cultures, as well as the Olympic spirit of course!
The abstract shape of the figures depicts Rio’s Sugarloaf Mountain, while the colours in the design reflect Brazil’s flag.
The 2016 Olympics will be held from August 5 to the 21st, so you can start looking at hotels in Rio de Janeiro planning your holiday now! Hotelopia.com will help you find a great place to stay.
While you’re waiting you can learn some Brazilian Portuguese, shop for a sun hat and of course enjoy all that the London Olympics have to offer!
So will you be going to Rio?I’ll see you on the beach!
