Arrested Development

This exciting news, reported by Vulture and Gawker, indicates that Netflix will release all 10 episodes of season 4 of Arrested Development on the same day some time next year.  I'll be able to sit down with my wife and cruise through what, hopefully, will be a continuation of the humor that made the series great in the first place.

I was one of the late comers to the series and didn't actually watch it until after the show was canceled.  With our Netflix subscription, which at the time included DVD rental, we eagerly watched all of the first 3 seasons in  rapid succession.  We were pretty disappointed that it ended so quickly and have been interested every time there have been rumors of a return.  To know that it's coming back and to know that I'll be able to watch all 10 episodes as quickly as I can stand it, is very good news.

What's even more interesting is some of the new things they've talked about introducing with Season 4 – From the Vulture article, the creator Hurwitz mentioned “There's going to be some mystery sprinkled throughout this [but] instead of watching one a week and try to get ahead of it, the hope is [fans] will watch them all together and then go back and look for clues and connections.”  So, they know most of us will be watching them all in rapid succession and since they are continually available through streaming, they're trying to take advantage of the instant availability to watch again.  It's great to see creative people looking for ways to take advantage of the technology now available.

More on Netflix

While Netflix streaming still does not have everything I would want, I do find they have a lot of children's programming for my kids which makes the continued subscription pricing worth my dime.  Now that they are adding more and more original content, it's even more enticing.  I haven't watched Lillyhammer yet but I probably will  Plus, I see them building series like Kevin Spacey's House of Cards  and Arrested Development and I think “If these are good, the price is still right.”  In fact, as they build out more content they become much more like a HBO or Showtime.  I subscribe to both of those (more $ per month than Netflix) and probably watch less. What I do watch is mostly their original series.

I see the lines blurring more and more between these content providers – HBO GO now allows for streaming of content via multiple types of devices much like Netflix.  Netflix serves up movies, series and is now developing their own content.  How soon until we see a Netflix channel on satellite or cable?

For now I'll keep all 3 but if I had to make a choice, Netflix is making a strong case.

If you're a fan of these networks, are you mostly in it for their movies or their original programming?

All of Arrested Development Season 4 to be available same day (Go Netflix!) 3
