First there was No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher. The plot revolved around a doctor and an assistant on a TV show who tried to keep their relationship purely physical.
Next came Love and Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, story about a pharmaceutical rep and a Parkinson’s disease patient who wanted nothing more than to be friends with benefits. How do both movies end? The two lead characters fall in love.
What’s to be expected next but a movie that clearly expresses its entire premise in its title, Friends with Benefits?
The upcoming movie (opening on July 22) stars Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake who play lead characters intended on sustaining a strictly physical relationship, but end up falling in love.
With these three back-to-back like-plotted movies, it’s hard to ignore the new Hollywood romantic comedy trend. Is this just a trend, as short-lived as any other product of Hollywood, or has the beloved Cinderella story line finally run its course? Has romantic comedies further deteriorated into something even more insufferable for boyfriends and husbands everywhere?
Either way, I’ll most likely go see this movie anyway, like I saw and enjoyed No Strings Attached and Love and Other Drugs. That is the curse of being a female audience between the age of 15 and 34.
