It's all clear now. That long-winded rationalization by Chris Webber on TNT Tuesday night about keeping the Sacramento Kings in Sacramento.
He's stacking his chips so HE can buy the team.
This actually makes some sense. True, C-Webb may really like the team, and may really like the area (since he lived and played in Sacramento for most of the best years of Sacramento Kings basketball). But this is also the arena and organization that honored him with the retirement of his NBA jersey (so there may be some selfish motivation behind this as well – but hey, I'm not hatin' the playa !!)
Chris is going to have a steep hurdle to jump as, Joe and Gavin Maloof, the current owners of the Kings, will be meeting with the NBA’s Board of Governors this week to present their case about why they want to move the franchise to Anaheim. The Maloofs have been unsuccessful in their efforts to get a new arena built in Sacramento and plan to have the team play in the Honda Center, home of the Anaheim Ducks, beginning next season.
I live in Sacramento, so I've got some ties to the arena, to the team, and to the atmosphere that Kings fans bring – we've been voted the loudest fans and the loudest arena in all of NBA many years. It was a packed house again tonight for what may have been the last game for the team as they took the defending champion Lakers to overtime, but unfortunately lost by a final score of 116-108.
What do you think? Do you have an opinion on the possible move for the team or of Webber's group of investors that are thinking about purchasing the team?
It would be awfully sad if the team had to leave.
