People sometimes love to take their games with them and while there are portable systems like the Nintendo DS or the Playstation Portable we are not talking about those today.
Today we are going to talk about three devices you may not have even heard about. These devices are handheld, have removable storage as well as some internal storage and can also play games.
What kind of games can these play? Well they can’t play the current games on your DS or PSP but they can play older games such as arcade classics, SNES, Genesis even Game Boy Advance and some of the older Dos games are playable on these consoles!
The three devices that we are going to be talking about today are the Dingoo A320, The GP2X Wiz and the Pandora.
One of the first devices that I was exposed to was a small media player called the Dingoo A320. This white device had a small 2.8” lcd screen and usually comes in 1 , 2 or 4gb of internal memory. This can play movies and mp3’s but it can also play games as well! It has a suite of based players that can play genesis, snes or even some of the arcade games of your youth. One of the best selling points is the price of this unit at only $89.00 this is the cheapest unit that’s out there today that can do it all.
However, there are some major flaws with this unit. For example the card slot for additional storage is Mini-SD which is a dead format so you either have to get an adapter or root around for a Mini-SD Card. Also compared to other units this one is VERY s-l-o-w as some games emulated on this would either run too slow or too fast which made trying to relive my childhood memories a bit harder. Also for some of the games you have to convert them to a format that the Dingoo understands so it can find them and this is very time consuming and frustrating as well.
Bottom line if you are in the market for a portable gaming device and you really don’t have that much in the way of cash give this unit a try. It will emulate most of your favorite games and you’ll get hours of enjoyment out of this.
The GP2X wiz is a competitor against some of the handhelds out there and has been in the business for quite sometime. The Wiz is the latest offering from Gamepark Holdings and I have to say that I am very impressed with this. The first thing is that this unit accepts SD cards which are found all over the place and you can get them off ebay at a decent price. This unit also comes with a touch screen which is how you can access the menus but also play some of the games that are bundled with the unit.
Some of the coolest features of this unit are that it’s run off a linux based operating system, can run flash games that are downloaded off the internet, runs emulated games close to near speed (if not dead on), has a very large independent fan base developing applications and emulated games for this device and can also play movies and mp3’s as well!
There are only two flaws that I can see with this unit the first being the battery. The older units ran off batteries but this one has a lithium battery that’s integreal to the unit (but can be charged via computer or wall outlet with an adapter). Also the price might be steep for a few (which can range from $149 – $179) depending on where you shop.
If you’re looking for a reasonably priced media player that can play movies, mp3’s and some of the best games that are out there. Look no further than the GP2X Wiz as this console will give you all you want and more!
Wanting to let this little demon out of it’s box the developers were striving to make one of the most powerful handhelds on the planet today. Powerful enough to do whatever you wanted but small enough to fit in your pocket. Thus the Pandora was born and I have to say that they have succeeded in their mission.
While I do not own one of these consoles yet (I have put in a word to see if I can get a test one to review to share my experiences with the rest of you) there are countless videos showing off the raw power of this device. Not only does it have a touch screen but it has a full qwerty keyboard as well as two joypads!
How powerful is this device? Lets just say you can check your email, surf the web and do all that on this device but you can also play Quake 3 on this handheld. Want proof?
Drawbacks for this system the first and foremost drawback is finding this device. This is really a project to see if they could make a device and get it done and the first round of these are going to the people that have pre-ordered them. The second draw back is the price of these units they are $330.00 each and for the price of one of these units you could buy a bigger and fully functional netbook. Another thing while this unit is small it is not going to be easy to type on (I own a Asus EEE 900 PC netbook and it’s hard for me to type on that!)
In closing no matter what unit you choose it will provide you with hours upon hours of entertainment. Now if you’ll excuse me I am going to play some Wolfenstein 3D On my Wiz!
