ROCKLIN,CA — A Rocklin man was sentenced Friday to four years in state prison for pointing a laser beam at a Placer County sheriff’s helicopter.
Jamie Allen Downie, 35, projected the beam in July, 2009 while the chopper was on a routine patrol over Rocklin.
The Placer County District Attorney’s Office said pointing a laser beam at an aircraft in flight is a federal offense. However, court spokesman Art Campos said federal officials allowed the office to prosecute the case in Placer Superior Court.
Downie entered a plea of guilty to two felony counts of discharging a laser at an aircraft, according to the office. [via]
