If you're following the news you probably heard about a heckler that had to be escorted out of the room during the first day of the Sotomayor confirmation hearings.
Interestingly enough, you didn't hear much else about that.
That heckler was Norma Roe !!!
Norma McCorvey — better known as “Jane Roe,” the woman at the center of the Supreme Court’s landmark abortion rights ruling of 1973 — was arrested at Monday’s Senate confirmation hearing for Sonia Sotomayor.
The “Roe” in Roe v. Wade and another protester were arrested after they made their way into the hearing room and began screaming during the opening statement of newly sworn Minnesota senator Al Franken.
Historical Background
McCorvey revealed in the ’80s that she was indeed the plaintiff in the famous case. In the years since the Roe v. Wade ruling, McCorvey has not only converted to Christianity and become an advocate of the anti-abortion movement — she’s recanted most of the story on which her case was based.
In the case, McCorvey claimed that her pregnancy was the result of a rape, a story she now claims is untrue. Roe v. Wade took three years before it finally reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973, during which time McCorvey gave birth to the baby in question.
McCorvey and her longtime partner Connie Gonzales split in 1992, three years after she publicly came out of the closet, two years before she published her memoir of the court battle I Am Roe, and just one year before joining the anti-abortion movement. [via]
Interesting…to say the least.
Below is the video from the incident.
